Google Map Pack Ranking has become an important factor for local businesses in the last few years. So many of my visitors want to find out how to rank in Google My Business. - Why some competition leaps ahead of you

What is Google Map Pack Ranking and how is it different to Google My Business and Google Places
Just to be clear, its often known as Google places, Google Maps and Google my Business. Google places was replaced by Google My Business. Google maps uses the Google My Business information and presents them with the map results.
So often you hear of the Google Map Pack Ranking, but in effect its appearing in the top 3 of your category within an area. When Google serves a search engine result (in my example below, it is showing the top 3 ranked web design company’s in the Wolverhampton area) it will if appropriate take the top 3 business results and show them on a map – thus the expression Google Map Pack Ranking.

Interestingly as seen in the image above, you can actually get the top 3 results served in the Google search engine results page along with the testimonials if it find a keyword that matches . In the image above and in my video it picks up on the word company. So this is a clever trick to get up the rankings for keywords associated with your business.
Why some competition leaps ahead of you
After a lot of effort and frustration. You may of noticed that some Google My Business locations seem to rank higher than you and they seems to be doing everything wrong or nothing whatsoever. How can that be. If we ranked it on effort surely we should be in the top 3. I get it and understand your pain.
This is where you really need to come to terms with a well known classic fable, The Tortoise and the Hare.
Video: Two approaches for ranking in Google My Business
In this video, if you know the Hare and tortoise story, you will fully see the differences to consider. Both offer a forward approach. I’m going to help you see both options you can take to local SEO using Google My Business.
The Tortoise approach for you Google My Business listing
Method One
Use the slow methodical method. This is about sticking to the guidelines but doing so with determination. The rewards take a long time. As mentioned, the methodical approach is similar to the tortoise in Aesops story of The Hare and The Tortoise.
I recommend at least for 2 weeks running add descriptive photos. Make sure they are GEO tagged. Add a post each day if you can. Carefully choose useful keywords for your audience. Ask for a reviews from the links made available on Google My Business. Write a website article and link it through. Add a useful video, slowly, slowly, slowly, you will start to rank
When it comes to new posts, you should follow Google s advice

Alternatively consider
Jump ahead “Hare like” approach if you want it
Method Two
Do you want a business listing boost? Ever wondered why other listings seems to jump so quickly? Chris Palmer explains his approach. He is an incredibly intelligent guy that really knows his stuff. It more of a Hare in the Aesop fable, but it does get quick results.

For me, I’m going for the long term traction approach. For you its good to see all approaches if you want to rank well in Google My business now and in the future.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I have stuck with the long term tortoise approach. The idea is over the next few months you will see lots of slow rewards as you start to apply what you learn. With Google empowering local business to use the various areas I cover in my tutorials, now is the time to take advantage and optimise the safe way.
