Try these 53 proven fixes, cut out the guesswork and get your profile to the top faster in 2026.
If you had a time machine… what advice would you give your past self?
Let’s rewind five years.
Picture meeting a frustrated business owner, someone lost in a maze of Google Maps myths, wasting hours on outdated tactics, and feeling like ranking is impossible.
That was me around 2020.
If I’d had this list back then, I would’ve saved myself years of frustration, ranked faster, and built a more profitable business, without the stress.
Now, you get to skip the hard part.
The 53 Golden Nuggets for GBP Success
I’ve broken down the most important lessons I learned the hard way. Use these as your shortcut to better rankings, more traffic, and less stress.
Profile Basics
- Google reviews help authenticate your business. Keep asking happy customers for them!
- Keep your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistent; too many changes can hurt your trust score.
- Make checking your Google Business Profile a daily habit.
- The Knowledge Panel is always evolving—stay curious.
- AI is changing search, but trust still wins.
- Google Maps and Google Search results are not the same—optimize for both.
Ranking & Reputation
- Play by the rules. Google expects you to know them. (Like Monopoly, competitors WILL call you out for cheating.)
- Aim for a 100% green profile; amber and red won’t help you rank.
- There’s no delete button for your profile. (But I found a way…it's on my YouTube Channel. Reply if you want access!)
- Stop thinking everything is about keywords. There are 200+ ranking factors, and they’re NOT equal.
- “Quick win” tools rarely work. Save your money.
Customer Insights & Competition
- Survey your customers. Don’t guess what they want.
- Watch your competitors and learn from what they do better.
- Check your profile in incognito mode, on mobile, and on desktop.
- Regularly add citations & links related to your industry.
- Google cares more about what your customers say than what you say.
- Analyze your keywords in GBP Insights.
Content & Engagement
- Look at Google Images, then replicate what Google rewards.
- Products = Packaged services. Don’t limit yourself.
- Local search works differently than organic search.
- Use every Google feature available to you.
- It’s okay to dismiss Google’s “suggestions.”
- Post images & updates regularly.
- Ranking takes time. Accept it.
Trust & Authenticity
- Always add the year your business was established.
- Bad reviews happen. You can’t remove them all.
- Genuine 5-star reviews sometimes get removed. Don’t panic.
- 99% of Google advice is outdated or harmful, ignore it.
- Never buy link-building services on Fiverr.
- Never use a PO Box for your business.
- Google’s idea of the “town center” isn’t always yours. (See My Video on the centroid)
- Your business hours affect your ranking. Open > Closed.
Optimization & Safety
- Use heatmap software to track real results.
- Show your real business and location in photos & videos.
- Use videos on your profile to engage visitors and send positive signals.
- Google has very few human reviewers. Most suspensions come from competitors or spambots.
- The best strategy? Think about humans, not Google bots.
- Trust is built by responding to every customer interaction.
- Offer multiple contact options eg. SMS, WhatsApp, etc.
- Use the right categories, and check them as they change all the time.
- Build a brand, not just a Google Business Profile.
Advanced Tactics
- Use Q&A to answer common questions.
- Your website is a huge ranking factor, keep it updated.
- Deleting a Google profile is nearly impossible (but there’s one way… reply for details).
- Show E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust.
- Before you post, ask: “Does this help my customers?”
- Never duplicate a business listing, unless it’s a legit separate location.
- Use Google Ads for short-term visibility only, remember they’ll eat your budget over time.
- The best marketing? Video reviews from real customers.
- Avoid AI-generated photos & articles. Google can spot them.
- Check who else manages your business profile. (Surprise: It’s not always just you.)
- Every link you post should be fast-loading & mobile-friendly.
- Some industries (locksmiths, plumbers) get extra scrutiny from Google.
