Reverse Engineering
We all know though that it’s hard to know what to do – most of the tips out there are getting business listings suspended. And getting a Google business profile reinstated can be a really difficult process as Google rarely reveals where you went wrong In today’s video I decided to show you what is working right now by analysing what Whitespark report found and how you can safely do to rank first in Google maps/profile

Here are the 20 most important tips
- Primary GMB category – Just select your best category for the customers. Thes change so you can locate additional GMB categories if it’s relevant on this GMB Categories link
- Keywords in GMB business title – don’t fall into the trap of adding keywords in your business title for a quick benefit – it will get you banned
- The proximity of address to searcher. There is little you can do about this part of the algorithm
- The physical address in the city of search – Similar to the above signal, it seems if you’re a service this could be still a slight disadvantage
- Additional categories – Google My Business Categories Aren’t Always Right. Especially if you haven’t checked for some time. It’s an ever-changing optimization that you may have not realized. see this video
- High Google Numerical Ratings – This seems to be what everyone thinks is number one on this list – it’s a bit too obvious though isn’t it?
- Completeness of GMB listing – Yes you can fill out everything and get it to 100%. Even the 85% issue with the logo is no longer a problem
- Quality / Authority of inbound links to the domain – This is all about the brand. Brand building quality links to your website which have a long-term impact on local rankings along with organic.
- Keywords in Native Google Reviews – This is very hard to force. Though you can suggest it via email or text. THen on occasions, it gets picked up
- Removal of spam / spam-fighting – Here it can be done, is it ethical, well Google rates it at number 10, so it appears Google rewards it!
- Keywords in GMB landing page title – Be sure your main keyword is in your title tag. That main keyword should be geo-specific.
- Quantity of Native Google Reviews (w/text) – Native reviews are more of a regular factor this year. Don’t underestimate this it is an increasing factor
- Verified GMB Listing – I’m never too sure why this isn’t done straight away. Just add your postcard code. For some reason so many business owners don’t get any further than this. There are several other ways if you can get verified without having a postcard
- Internal Linking Across Entire Website – With 4 types of most important contextual (in the blog) navigational – (use categories and products from GMB too ) footer and image links If you do link an image, be sure to use a relevant caption and ALT text, as both of these signals can indicate to search engines what the image is about and why it is there in context.
- Geographic Keyword Relevance of Domain Content – local search has to be specific, content on the page is about your service in a location
- Quality/Authority of Inbound Links to GMB Landing Page URL – The algorithm determines your authority/link juice/page rank. So as a quick rule, local relevant links are good
- Proper Placement of Map Pin – Check yours as often pins aren’t quite perfect. Remember Google rewards precision
- Page Authority of GMB Landing Page URL – We explain how to get that – https://moz.com/domain-analysis and how to find out how much authority your website actually has.
- Internal Links to GMB Landing Page from Other Page of Website – Links to your homepage & GMB profile pages – Find out how much is indexed and go for a deeper dive
- Keywords on GMB Landing Page H1/H2 Tags – To recap, you want your local SEO landing pages to include: H1 – Multiple H2’s – Multiple Calls To Action – Embedded Map of the area – Link to your Google My Business profile
